If you are new to coaching or if you would like clarification about the meaning of coaching, here are a couple of definitions:
“Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaching honors the client as the expert in his/her life and work and believes that every client is creative, resourceful, and whole. The coach’s responsibility is to:
- Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve;
- Encourage client self-discovery;
- Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies; and
- Hold the client responsible and accountable.
Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs.” Source: International Coaching Federation
A second definition of coaching:
“our system of coaching is to clear away the obstacles that are blocking people’s best selves. We add nothing; we simply subtract what isn’t working. The essential self that remains is far more sophisticated, intelligent, and beautiful than anything we could dream up.” Source: Martha Beck Inc.
As a coach, I help clients spot and remove mental blocks that are preventing them from using their talents, skills, and gifts to perform to the best of their abilities. Once these blocks are identified and acknowledged, and when the client is ready, we partner to create a process and action plan to achieve personal and professional goals with authenticity and enthusiasm.
My own coaching experience
I had the privilege to experience the transformative effects of life coaching while attending a Meet and Greet event hosted by Martha Beck and her team in Arizona in November 2011. Throughout the day, while learning about new approaches to coaching clients, we were coached by the one and only Martha!
I was beside myself because—not only was I one degree of separation from Oprah, but– I was also able to get unstuck from a pesky belief I had about work and life balance. After a few key questions from Martha and an emotional epiphany on my part, I felt a sense of relief, clarity and most importantly, hope. Here we are Martha and I after our coaching session. Can you tell by my puffy face that I cried a lot?
